Where to shoot, and — the part most guides skip — what hour to be there.
A pre-wedding shoot lives or dies on light, not on location. The most photogenic place within three hours of Coimbatore will give you flat, ugly frames at one in the afternoon, and a plain stretch of road will look extraordinary forty minutes before sunset. So this list is organised by what each place gives you and when to be standing in it.
Distances below are approximate and worth confirming against current traffic before you plan a day around them. Where a location needs permission — and several here do — we arrange it as part of the booking.
About two to three hours north. Tea slopes, eucalyptus and the mist that makes the Nilgiris worth the drive. Shoot the first two hours after sunrise; by mid-morning the mist has burned off and you have lost the reason you came.
Further than Kotagiri and considerably busier. Worth it for the lake and the colonial architecture, but plan around the crowds — weekday mornings only, in our experience.
Roughly three and a half hours south, up thirty-odd hairpins. Tea estates, cloud and almost nobody else. The best full-day option on this list if you have the day to give it.
Close — about an hour west — and green in a way the city is not. Forest and water. Access is regulated, so this one needs arranging in advance.
Minutes from the studio. Carved stone, deep shade and hard shafts of light. A completely different register from the hill locations, and the one we would pick for a couple who want the shoot to feel rooted in Kongu country.
The hill road rather than the temple itself — elevation, the city laid out below, and good west light in the last hour of the day.
In the middle of the city, tree-lined and quiet at six in the morning. If you want a shoot without a road trip, this is the honest answer.
Water, birds and open sky about half an hour out. Best at first light, and genuinely at its best in the cooler months.
Water and rock, roughly an hour away. Seasonal — go after the rains or there is nothing falling to photograph.
Three-ish hours and across the border, so it becomes a day trip rather than a shoot. Filming permissions are required and are not always granted — but the frames are unlike anything on the Tamil Nadu side.
Two practical notes. First: book the golden hour, not the day. An hour of good light beats six hours of bad, and we would rather shoot two locations properly than five badly. Second: outfit changes cost you light. Plan one, at most two, and change fast.
October to February for the hills and the lakes — cooler, clearer, and the waterfalls still have water. April and May are hard work outdoors here and it shows in the frames.
We plan around light rather than hours. A single-location shoot is a morning or an evening; two locations usually means a full day with the middle of it spent travelling rather than shooting.
Several of them, yes — forest areas, some temples and anywhere across the Kerala border in particular. We arrange permissions as part of the booking rather than leaving you to discover the problem on the day.
Yes, and most couples do both — a song-led film alongside the stills. Several of the films on this page were shot exactly that way.
Solid colours over busy prints, and something you can move in. Bring a second outfit only if you are willing to lose twenty minutes of light to it.
